Read more below about symptoms and treatment parameters to find out the best way to proceed.
Symptoms
While we typically associate heart failure with older adults, people of any age can be stricken with the condition, especially if they have a birth defect that causes the heart to operate in an inefficient manner. That being said, it is important to note that in the early stages of congestive heart failure, many patients display no symptoms whatsoever. Later on, when symptoms appear, they can include some or all of the following:
- Otherwise inexplicable weight gain or loss
- Fluid buildup in the feet, legs and/or ankles
- Disorientation
- A hacking cough
- Nausea
- Increased nighttime urination
- Wheezing, shortness of breath and rapid breathing
Many things can cause congestive heart failure, including coronary artery disease, anemia, amyloidosis, a blood clot, heart valve disorders, untreated high blood pressure and certain lung disorders. Keep in mind that there can be many more symptoms and causes of congestive heart failure than the ones listed above. We have provided a brief listing so you can get a general idea of how serious the condition can be.
Treatment
Treatment regimens for congestive heart failure are as varied as its causes. A few representative treatment plans include:
- Lifestyle changes
- Drugs
- Surgery
- Ventricular assist devices (VADs)
- Transplants
- Treatment of the underlying disorders
