Elevated blood calcium levels are often discovered during routine laboratory testing and may have many different causes. While mild elevations sometimes require only monitoring, persistent hypercalcemia deserves careful evaluation.

Common causes include primary hyperparathyroidism, excessive vitamin D intake, certain medications, dehydration, and less commonly, underlying malignancy or other endocrine disorders.

Our evaluation includes review of medications, laboratory testing, measurement of parathyroid hormone and vitamin D levels when appropriate, and additional testing based on the clinical situation.

Identifying the underlying cause allows appropriate treatment while helping prevent complications involving the kidneys, bones, digestive system, and nervous system.
